Vice President urges citizens to be responsible for their health

Vice President Faisal Naseem has urged citizens to take personal responsibility for their health to minimise the risk of non-communicable diseases. He made the remarks in his speech at the special function held to celebrate the 35th anniversary of ADK Hospital.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Naseem noted the high number of non-communicable diseases in the Maldives, despite programmes initiated to create awareness on the issue. The vice president said citizens need to take personal responsibility for their own health and prioritise the prevention of non-communicable diseases. He also highlighted the notable achievements of ADK Hospital in the health sector, especially in developing human resources by training Maldivians to provide health services in the country.

At the ceremony, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ahmed Nashid said the management of ADK Hospital is preparing to bring major changes to the health sector by spending USD10 million in the next nine months to begin projects to establish MRI services, PET scans, as well as centres for a hyperbaric chamber, physiotherapy, and fertility. He said ADK Hospital will also establish a gym for the prevention of diseases and develop human resources in collaboration with Shafi'a Institute of Health. He added that 21 rooms will be developed as bystander accommodation blocks for individuals travelling from the atolls for medical treatment.

At the ceremony, Vice President Naseem presented awards to the best employees of ADK Hospital. As such, Consultant in Internal Medicine Dr. Nasheeda Saeed won the most prestigious award of Employee of the Year.
