Gov’t provides details on plan to solve housing crisis in Male’

Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam has provided details on the plan to resolve the housing difficulties faced by the people of Male’ City.

In a written statement to the Parliament of the Maldives, Minister Aslam said the construction of 2,000 of the 5,000 planned housing units has been contracted to JMC Projects India Limited, which includes 600 council housing units and 1,400 affordable housing units. The minister said MCC Construction Private Limited was handed the project site for the construction of 2,000 housing units in December last year, which also includes 600 council housing units and 1,400 affordable housing units. He said the projects will be completed by 2025.

Furthermore, Minister Aslam said Apollo Holdings Private Limited was contracted to construct 1,024 housing units in Hulhumale’, which include 120 council housing units, 240 affordable housing units, and 682 mid-range housing units. He also said the chart and policies are being formulated to issue 1,000 land plots in Hulhumale’ for the people of Male’, adding the land plots will be opened for applications once the preparations are completed by June. He said work is also being done to formulate the land-use plan and loan agreements to allocate funds to provide 2,000 land plots in Gulhifalhu.

In his Presidential Address, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih highlighted the plans to resolve housing difficulties faced by the people of Male’. As such, he announced plans to reclaim land from Giraavaru in Kaafu Atoll and issue 2,000 land plots for the people of Male’. He also highlighted the ongoing construction of 5,000 housing units in Hulhumale’ and plans to issue an additional 1,000 housing units in Hulhumale’ for the people of Male’.
