MMRI warns of coral bleaching event

Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI) has warned that the rise in ocean temperature in the coming months threatens to begin a coral bleaching event in the South Asia region.

MMRI stated the rise in temperature increases the stress on reefs, leading to coral bleaching. The institute stated the information published from the National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service shows the entire ocean territory of the Maldives is on the watch-level for coral bleaching, and is at risk of reaching the warning level in the coming months, adding that Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll will reach alert-level within 9-12 weeks.

Additionally, MMRI urged individuals and groups to report sites of coral bleaching on island reefs, as the issue is directly connected to the national economy. It also stated that the rise in ocean temperature has been increasing significantly since 1998.
