First session of Visioning Maldives Leadership Dialogue held

Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam has inaugurated the first session of the Visioning Maldives Leadership Dialogue.

The President’s Office of the Maldives is hosting the sessions of the Visioning Maldives Leadership Dialogue together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as part of the Executives Enhancement and Enrichment Programme (EEEP) 2021-2023 of the Maldives Civil Service Training Institute under its Civil Service Commission. The sessions expose leaders to the latest trends in public administration, development policy, and innovation. Each session brings together global experts and top political officials to solicit exchange and knowledge-sharing on 21st-century leadership to inspire and support the Government of Maldives in leapfrogging into a future-proof development nation.

The first session of the Visioning Maldives Leadership Dialogue was on leading through uncertainty and strategic foresight and explored how public administration can evolve to meet the continued uncertainties and complexities of the 21st century. The session saw the participation of UNDP Resident Representative to the Maldives Enrico Gaveglia as the moderator. It also had Strategic Advisor on Foresight from the UNDP Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific Aarathi Krishnan, who highlighted on-risk changing and its impact on development pathways as well as the importance of thinking long-term. The session was also attended by the Director of the Department of Local Authorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Vanuatu Leith Veremaito, who shared his experience on the practical application of strategic foresight from the Government of Vanuatu.

The high-level policy dialogue aims to familiarise participants with futures-informed anticipatory governance approaches and models. The first session was held online and saw over 300 participants, including senior government officials, and members of local councils.
