Trainings held to launch neighbourhood policing in all regions

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has conducted training programmes across the country as part of efforts to launch neighbourhood policing in all regions of the Maldives.

Efforts to launch neighbourhood policing across the country began on October 1, 2020. Under this project, MPS has conducted training programmes for police officers working in 100 islands where the services of MPS have been established. During these programmes, MPS has also met with local councils, non-governmental organisations and other institutions in the islands to inform them on the neighbourhood policing service and ways to collaborate to make the service more effective.

The neighbourhood policing model was introduced by MPS to facilitate closer coordination between the public and the police in eliminating crime and making communities safer. The model was first introduced in the Greater Male’ Region in 2018 and in Addu City and Fuvahmulah City in 2019 as a pilot project, before being launched as a priority of the Strategic Action Plan (SAP) of MPS.
