President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has officially launched the work on the biggest ever road development project to be conducted in Addu City.
President Solih officially launched work on the project during a ceremony held as part of his visit to Addu City. Minister of External Affairs of India Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives Abdulla Shahid accompanied the president to this ceremony.
The project, worth USD77 million, would be overseen by Afcons Infrastructure Limited. The new roads have been designed to resolve the issue of flooding, with storm water drainage systems being installed in Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo. The project would see the installation of 103 kilometres of storm water drainage systems.
A total of 107 kilometres of roads are set to be constructed across Addu City which includes Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo. Forty kilometres of road would be built with tar and bricks and 67 kilometres of road would be built by using a cement stabilised base layer.
The president and first lady are currently in Addu City as part of a four-day trip to the Maldives' southern cities. A high-level delegation accompanied them on this trip.
