President inaugurates newly developed Meedhoo Harbour

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has inaugurated the newly developed harbour in Meedhoo, Addu City.

The Meedhoo harbour development project was undertaken by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The state-owned company was contracted in 2019 to design and construct the harbour at a cost of USD2.4 million.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Operating Officer (CEO) Adam Azim said several development projects are being conducted in all inhabited islands, with MTCC involved in 103 ongoing projects, of which 98 projects are expected to be completed within three years. He said the total cost of the projects adds up to USD390 million.

Also at the ceremony, Parliamentary Representative of Addu-Meedhoo Constituency Rozaina Adam said President Solih has conducted the most projects in Meedhoo, and that it shows his commitment to addressing the needs of all citizens.

MTCC deepened the harbour and its entrance and constructed a new sand fill breakwater, a 115m seawall, and a 496m quay wall structure as part of the project. MTCC also constructed pavements and installed lights along the harbour. The state-owned company stated the harbour in Meedhoo has a unique design compared to other harbours and was constructed at a higher elevation to prevent flooding from high tides.

President Solih inaugurated the harbour as part of his four-day trip to the southern cities. He is accompanied by First Lady Fazna Ahmed and a high-level delegation of the government.
