HDC inaugurates project to build two preschools in Hulhumale' Phase II

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has held the groundbreaking ceremony for the project to build two new preschools in Hulhumale’ Phase II.

Deputy Managing Director of HDC Ahmed Athif joined the groundbreaking ceremony as well as Parliamentarian for the Hulhumale’ constituency Ali Niyaz and contractors. At the ceremony, Deputy Managing Director Athif said the fieldwork for the schools will be completed and handed over to the Ministry of Education in August in order to begin sessions this year.

HDC contracted SJ Construction Private Limited to develop two new preschools in March. The project involves building two preschools with 24 classrooms near the Hiya neighbourhood in Hulhumale’ Phase II. The duration of the project is six months.

Hulhumale’ Phase II was first populated in 2020 when owners of land plots first sold in the area began moving into their new homes. The population of the area began increasing sharply when recipients of the 6,720 housing units developed under the Hiya housing project began moving in to their flats last year. However, the area still lacks several essential services and residents of the area are required to travel often to Hulhumale’ Phase I or Male’ for services.

While HDC has contracted the project to develop two preschools in Hulhumale’ Phase II, Ministry of Education has also contracted a company to develop a school in the area to cater to 1,000-1,200 students. The project was contracted last June, with a duration of 18 months.

The education ministry had earlier revealed four schools will be developed in Hulhumale’ Phase II. This includes three schools developed under the contractor finance, design and build model, and an international school developed by a foreign party. All schools will include grades 1 to 10.
