COVID-19 vaccination rate declining in the Maldives

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed the COVID-19 vaccination rate in the Maldives is currently on a decline.

The nationwide COVID-19 vaccination programme began in the Maldives in February 2021. As part of the vaccination programme, all individuals over the age of 12 are being administered the COVID-19 vaccine.

As per the latest statistics of HPA, 398,525 people have got at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, representing 88.01% of the eligible population. HPA revealed 383,768 people, or 84.75% of the eligible population, have received two shots. Meanwhile, 156,846 people have also received a booster dose, representing 34.64% of the eligible population.

HPA revealed the daily vaccination rate had been above 2,000 since the rollout of the booster dose began earlier this year. However, HPA said this has declined in the past week, with a total of 2,048 people receiving the booster dose over the last 7 days. Meanwhile, 66 people got their first dose and 167 people got their second dose during this period.

As per the COVID-19 statistics published by HPA for last week, 665 new cases were recorded within the last week. This has taken the total number of cases recorded in the Maldives to 177,658. The country has recorded 298 deaths from COVID-19.

The State of Public Health Emergency imposed in the Maldives due to the COVID-19 pandemic was lifted last month, two years after the emergency was announced following the first case of COVID-19 in the Maldives in March 2020. With the lifting of the public health emergency, all restrictions imposed due to COVID-19 have also been removed.
