Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem has stated fundamental changes are being made to the Maldives health sector.
Speaking at the ceremony held on the occasion of World Health Day 2022, Minister Naseem said the projects and policies for the health sector are being formulated under the climate-smart initiative, highlighting that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has prioritised climate change action and public health. The minister said the government is focused on making citizens healthier and more active as well as guaranteeing medical treatment and prevention of illnesses. As such, he said the government’s projects and policies are making fundamental changes to the health sector.
Furthermore, Minister Naseem said the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the importance of guaranteeing good healthcare services for citizens. The minister added the Maldives has been exemplary in overcoming the health emergency due to the government’s work with businesses, organisations, and individuals. He noted that the health risks caused by environmental issues can also be overcome with such collaboration.
Additionally, Minister Naseem said the government is preparing to revitalise the primary healthcare system with improvements and is working with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to survey and collect data on the causes of various illnesses and diseases such as cancer in the Maldives, in order to increase public awareness on health risks and make Maldivians more healthy and resilient.
