India interested in investing in Maldives renewable energy sector

India has expressed interest in investing in the renewable energy sector of the Maldives.

The Government of India expressed its interest during discussions held with Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna during her three-day official visit to India to attend the 7th edition of the Raisina Dialogue. During the visit, Minister Shauna participated in the panel discussion on New Fuels, Old Aspirations: Moving the Next 5 Billion, at the Raisina Dialogue.

Furthermore, Minister Aminath Shauna held meetings with cabinet ministers of the Government of India including Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy of India Raj Kumar Singh. At the meeting, the two officials discussed increasing cooperation in the field of renewable energy and exploring India’s proposed one grid project.

Additionally, Minister Shauna met Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav and discussed areas of collaboration and the progress of the two countries since the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), as well as the run-up to COP27 to focus on enhancing the focus on adaptation. She also met Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics, and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw and discussed avenues of further cooperation as well as extending technical support for the establishment of a digital identification system in the Maldives.
