Gov’t to increase wages for lecturers

The Government of the Maldives has revealed that the wages for university lecturers will be increased along with the salary increments for teachers. The statement was made in response to uncertainty on whether the wages for lecturers would be increased as part of the government’s work to improve the salary structure for the education sector.

The government said work is being done to include improvements to the wages for university lecturers in the state pay framework to ensure that they will receive higher wages as part of the salary structure changes. The changes to the state pay framework also include improving wages for teachers at the National Centre for the Holy Quran.

In a televised address to the nation on May 1, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced a new and improved salary structure for the education sector, unveiling significant increments to the wages of teachers and other education sector staff. The president said it marks a significant step in the administration’s commitment to ensuring better wages for all in the workforce that contribute toward national progress.

Following the changes brought to the wage structure of the education sector, teachers will receive 56% increment to their current wages. Meanwhile, Rank 1 Principals will receive an 82% increment and Rank 2 Principals will receive a 59% increment.
