Ministry of Higher Education has announced that five training providers have been awarded 35 courses to train 1400 students.
The training providers were awarded the courses under the Skills for a Resilient Workforce Maldives programme, which is an initiative by the higher education ministry and the Maldives: Enhancing Employability and Resilience of Youth (MEERY) project aimed to build the nation with skilled and resilient youth.
The ministry stated that the 35 new certificate-level-3 courses aim to increase employability of youth with industry demanding skills to join the workforce under the Skills for a Resilient Workforce programme from the sectors of tourism, tourism-related construction, information and communications technology (ICT), and agriculture.
Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan awarded the courses to the training providers at a special ceremony. The courses were awarded to Maldives Institute of Technology, Maritime Academy of Maldives, Male’ Fitness Club, Villa College, and Zikura International College.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Hassan said the Maldives faced difficult challenges after foreign workers left the country following the COVID-19 pandemic. The minister highlighted the government’s work to quickly train young people for the vacant roles and expressed hope that technical and vocational education and training are taken up by capable and responsible individuals. He added that the government is focused on providing educational and employment opportunities for youth.
