AgroNat to provide climate-resilient agriculture systems to farmers

Agro National Corporation (AgroNat) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture to provide climate-resilient agriculture systems to farmers.

The MoU is part of the ministry’s Maldives Agribusiness Programme (MAP) to promote and support climate-resilient agriculture systems and innovative technology for farmers in the Maldives. As part of the programme, AgroNat will be supplying climate-resilient agriculture systems such as seeds, nutrients, pesticides, equipment, and technology to 26 islands in three northern atolls. AgroNat will also be collaborating with the ministry to conduct training programmes for farmers.

MAP began with the aim to assist the fisheries ministry to implement a structured policy and incentive framework for the agriculture sector. It provides investment resources to capitalise on the opportunities existing for sectoral growth and introduce climate-smart technological solutions suitable for the Maldives, which overcome land and soil constraints and mitigate against climate change.

The goal of MAP is to sustainably increase the incomes, food security and nutrition status of small farmer households. Its development objective is the strengthened enabling environment for sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture. Currently, assistance is being provided to farmers in Haa Alifu Atoll, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, and Noonu Atoll through the programme.
