MTCC concludes Rakeedhoo shore protection project

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has concluded the shore protection project of Rakeedhoo, Vaavu Atoll.

As part of the project, MTCC carried out the construction of a 200m breakwater and 40m groynes. Moreover, an area of 560cbm was dredged to provide residents with a swimming area. The area was completed with the construction of 20m groynes and 25m revetment. The value of the shore protection project is USD593,000.

The Rakeedhoo Island Council said the residents of the island face a serious problem with erosion. Erosion is still expected to occur depending on current changes although the shore protection project is constructed on the island, according to the council. The problem of erosion began to worsen after the construction of the harbour. MTCC has been contracted to solve the issue.

Rakeedhoo has a population of 370 people, and the island has a land area of six hectares.
