Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has announced over 14,000 new tourist beds have been brought into operation across the country by the current administration.
The two years of the tenure of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih were shaken by a global pandemic. Some other countries prominent for tourism were also closed down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, tourism in the Maldives was revived sooner than expected due to the strict measures implemented as part of the government's long-term policy.
Speaking on a programme aired on PSM News, Minister Maumoon said the government has introduced 14,000 new beds for tourism despite the challenges faced by COVID-19, which he described as a great achievement. The minister said investors are interested in the Maldives but expressed concern that some individuals are undermining the trust of investors for political gains.
Furthermore, the minister stated two new resorts have been opened so far this year and two more resorts will be opened in the coming years, which is an additional 3,500 beds. The government now aims to bring in 8,000 beds annually, including resorts, guesthouses, hotels, and liveaboards.
