President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced the administration plans to develop a new building adjacent to Meyna School’s new campus.
Speaking at the diamond jubilee anniversary event, President Solih applauded the achievements of Meyna School of Holhudhoo, Noonu Atoll, stating that over its 75-year-long history, it has produced a large number of productive citizens. The president also celebrated the school for its numerous contributions to the history of the country’s education system.
Furthermore, President Solih noted that Meyna School is the fourth educational institution in the country to mark its diamond jubilee and described it as a source of pride for the northern region. He then spoke about its national-level achievements in the secondary and higher secondary examinations and said that 39 students of the school were O’level top achievers and 31 were A’level top achievers. He added that Mayna School students consistently achieve top marks internationally in business and accounting.
Additionally, President Solih spoke about the plans for the school and announced that the administration will develop a new building adjacent to the new campus, including 21 classrooms and an administrative wing. He added that the administration plans to re-purpose the old Meyna School campus into a youth centre with indoor sports facilities.
At the ceremony, President Solih presented commemorative plaques to 19 members of the staff of Meyna School who has served for over 20 years. Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali also released a book called Alimas to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the school.
Prior to the ceremony, President Solih unveiled a monument raised in Meyna School’s new campus to mark its diamond jubilee. The monument was designed by Hawwa Nishwa, who is a student of Meyna School who studied design and architecture. After unveiling the monument, President Solih joined a tea ceremony, during which activities were held to showcase the history of Meyna School, including how students were taught and the various changes made to the school, as well as the traditional activities and sports that were popular in Holhudhoo.
Meyna School was opened in 1947 as the Rahyithunge Madrasah and was renamed Mayna School in 1969. It was converted to a government school in 1992 and is the second oldest educational institution in Noonu Atoll. The school currently teaches 350 students from pre-school to grade 12 on two campuses.
