Gov’t conducts workshops on introduction of electronic transactions law

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has begun a series of workshops on the introduction of the new electronic transactions law.

The first workshop was inaugurated by the Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna. The workshops are aimed at providing relevant information on the new electronics transaction law to state institutions, private businesses, and those working in the legal sector. The workshops are being conducted with the Commerce Law Development Programme (CLDP) of the United States Department of Commerce and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ratified the Electronic Transactions Act in April. It establishes a mechanism to ensure the validity of electronic transactions and to promote the use of trust services in electronic commerce. It also outlines the policies that govern the use of electronic transactions and trust services.

The objectives of the legislation include ensuring the validity of electronic transactions made locally and abroad, including electronic signatures and trust services, facilitating electronic transactions, and removing legal obstacles to the conduct of electronic transactions. It also promotes electronic communication through trust services and seeks to establish public confidence in such transactions.
