The Education Sector Research Group has recommended the government to establish an expert committee consisting of eight members to oversee issues related to teachers. The research group made the recommendation in its report identifying issues facing teachers in the education sector.
The report highlighted that teachers endure a high amount of stress by having to spend a large amount of time on work that is irrelevant to their job, and that changes have to be made to their workload and work-life balance to recruit and retain exceptional and experienced teachers. Therefore, the report recommended that the government form a committee of experts to oversee and solve the issues facing teachers, and suggested that the committee be called the Teacher Enhancement Committee and be chaired by the Minister of Education.
Additionally, the report stated that the experts should be given the message that the president is closely monitoring the issues related to teachers by appointing his representative as the alternative chairperson. It added that the committee should also consist of representatives of the Civil Service Commission (CSC), the human resources and school administration departments of the Ministry of Education, the teacher’s registration board, as well as an experienced school principal, and two teachers with 10 years of experience.
The report added that the committee should be run under the education ministry in collaboration with the CSC and should work to ensure that the workload of teachers are in line with their job description. It also stated that the committee should establish policies regarding the salaries and benefits provided to teachers, solve issues related to the recruitment of teachers, and ensure that teachers have a healthy work-life balance.
