Also at the ceremony, senior officials of various state institutions awarded high achievers scholarships to 79 students.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan noted the high priority President Solih and his administration have given to higher education and the development of human resources for various fields in the Maldives. He said that the current scholarship schemes allow students to study in their preferred country and field.
Furthermore, Minister Hassan highlighted that President Solih has provided leeway for students who had previously taken loans to study abroad by designating the loans as scholarships. He also said that the administration had made no changes to the scholarship schemes while cutting costs in other areas during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The students selected for the president’s scholarship are those who have obtained an A* in three subjects of GCE A-level and the HSC examinations or A* in the Shahadha Saanaviyya exam from an Arabic medium school. Meanwhile, the students selected for the high achievers scholarship are those who have obtained an A pass in three subjects of GCE A-level as well as the HSC examinations. The government will cover the costs for students who received the scholarships to complete their first degree in the field of their choice in a country of their choice.
