Gov’t and WAMCO conduct waste management training programme

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology and Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) have begun conducting a training programme to promote sustainable waste management practices.

The training programme is aimed at members of the Male’ City Women’s Development Committee (WDC). The programme was inaugurated by Minister of State Ali Salih and Deputy Minister Mohamed Anshar at the environment ministry.

At the training programme, the ministry officials noted that the Male’ City WDC has the biggest influence in changing the waste management practices of the residents. As such, they said that the training programme is important to spread public awareness of the benefits of sustainable waste management.

The WDC members who participated in the training programme will also be conducting their own programmes in their constituencies and changes are to be implemented at the households in September. The environment ministry has thanked residents of Male’ for fully supporting the new regulations on waste sorting implemented in June and also thanked WAMCO employees for their work.

Sustainable waste management is one of the highest priorities of the government. As part of the efforts, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih launched the Greater Male' Waste to Energy Project in late 2021, which is one of the largest waste management initiatives in the Maldives, costing USD304 million and extending from the Greater Male' Region to Alifu Alifu Atoll and Vaavu Atoll.
