Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna has said that a total of 51MW solar capacity will be made available by the end of the presidential term.
Speaking at the 4th Congress of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Minister Shauna noted that Net Zero is an important policy of the administration. The minister said the government has completed solar energy projects on 40 islands so far. She said a total of 51MW of solar capacity will be made available across the country by the end of the term, highlighting it is twice the number of solar installations in the Maldives during the last presidential term. She mentioned the installation of solar capacity reduces the expense of energy generation.
Highlighting efforts to expand the solar capacity in the Maldives, Minister Shauna said the 41.8 MW solar project is still in the tendering process which is being conducted along with upgrading of the battery and electricity grid. The project worth USD195 million will reduce the fuel expenditure in the Maldives by over USD20 million annually. As such, the renewable energy capacity of the Maldives will be increased to 120MW when the projects are completed which would save the country USD58 million a year.
