WAMCO to clear legacy waste in atolls, operate Thilafushi treatment area

Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has been tasked with clearing legacy waste from eight islands in Kaafu Atoll and Vaavu Atoll and operating the Waste Reception Jetty and Pre-Treatment Area in Thilafushi, Kaafu Atoll.

The agreements were signed by Deputy Managing Director of WAMCO Yoosuf Siraj and Deputy Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Mohamed Ansar. WAMCO signed the Legacy Waste Project to establish the foundation for long-term waste management in the islands of Kaafu Atoll and Vaavu Atoll. As part of the agreement, the state-owned company will be clearing legacy waste in Guraidhoo, Maafushi, and Gulhi in Kaafu Atoll, as well as Rakeedhoo, Keyodhoo, Felidhoo, Thinadhoo, and Fulidhoo in Vaavu Atoll.

WAMCO also signed the official handover agreement for the Waste Reception Jetty and Pre-Treatment Area. The facility was developed by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) as part of The Greater Male’ Environmental Improvement and Waste Management project. It will allow WAMCO to increase the efficiency and timeliness of services to customers.
