Gov’t threatens to terminate Veymandoo School development contract

Ministry of Education has threatened to terminate the contract to develop Veymandoo School if the work is not being conducted in accordance with the agreement.

Nasa Link Private Limited was contracted to construct a three-storey building for Veymandoo School in August 2021. The fieldwork began in September 2021 but the project has still not been completed.

In a written statement to the Parliament of the Maldives, Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali said the contractor was required to complete the project in November 2021. She added that the contractor has not made any extra effort to complete the construction of the building quickly and has been given seven days to make progress. She said that the ministry will be nullifying the agreement if the contractor does not make any significant progress or fail to provide any documents regarding the work. She added that another contractor was tasked with the construction of a multipurpose hall in Veymandoo School and that the work began in May and will be completed on schedule in December.

The government allocated a large amount of funds in the state budget for the development of the education sector. The highest number of infrastructure projects being conducted in the Maldives are also for the development of the education sector. The government has been addressing concerns over some of the projects being stalled by holding discussions with the contractors, giving warnings, and terminating the contracts when necessary.
