Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali has stated that the Edexcel A Level examinations were replaced with the Cambridge International A Level examinations for the convenience of students.
Answering questions at the Parliament of the Maldives, Minister Aishath said that students have found it difficult to accommodate the Edexcel A Level examinations after completing the Cambridge O Level examinations. She highlighted that the administration has held a curriculum review symposium with individuals working in the education sector, in order to determine the challenges in teaching the curriculum. She said that the A Level examinations were switched to the Cambridge version on the recommendation of the school principals and teachers. She added that such decisions are made after obtaining the necessary data and consensus.
Additionally, Minister Aishath said that the Cambridge International A Level examinations have many advantages for the Maldives, as they would allow students to be taught more topical information. She added that it was difficult for the relevant authorities to hold discussions related to the Edexcel A Level examinations, as the only available international partner is the Edexcel Office in Sri Lanka.
Ministry of Education replaced the Edexcel A Level and AS Level examinations with the Cambridge International A Level and AS Level examinations on August 24. The education ministry stated Cambridge examination papers will be used for the academic years of 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 and that the students currently enrolled in higher education will not see any change.
