Financial assistance provided to islands affected by rain, floods

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has provided more than USD65,000 as financial assistance to islands affected by rain and floods in July.

NDMA has conducted assessments of 277 households affected by the rain and floods. The assessment showed 131 houses with damages to essential belongings and infrastructure. NDMA said it provided financial assistance to nine islands out of the 10 islands that reported effects of heavy rain.

Furthermore, NDMA also said six households were severely damaged in the rain and require major repairs. The authority revealed the damage to essential commodities amounted to USD19,000 and the damage to infrastructure amounted to USD62,000 while over USD65,000 has been provided to recover from the losses.

In total, 47% of households were damaged and 39% of the farms were damaged while 14% of damages attributed to other properties such as businesses and government buildings, according to statistics released by the NDMA. The largest amount of financial assistance was provided to Thimarafushi, Thaa Atoll, with over USD32,000.
