Ministry of Finance has revealed the Maldives received around USD4 million as Green Tax in July 2022.
Statistics from the finance ministry show the Maldives received USD3.9 million as Green Tax in July, out of which USD3.8 million was generated from resorts, USD97,000 was generated from guesthouses, and USD78,000 was generated from hotels.
The statistics show that Kaafu Atoll and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll generated the largest sums of Green Tax in July. As such, USD1.5 million was generated as Green Tax from tourist facilities of Kaafu Atoll. Additionally, USD435,000 was generated from tourist facilities in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, and USD299,000 was generated from Raa Atoll. The statistics also show that Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Thaa Atoll received the least in Green Tax, with USD84 and USD171 respectively.
The Green Fund was introduced in 2016 with the aim of tackling environmental issues in the Maldives as per the Tourism Act of the Maldives. As such, USD6 is charged as Green Tax per tourist for each day they spend at a resort or a hotel in the Maldives, while USD3 is charged as Green Tax per tourist for each day they stay at a guesthouse.
