Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has recorded a revenue of USD33 million received in Departure Tax.
Statistics published by MIRA shows that USD33 million was received in Departure Tax in the first eight months of 2022, which is a two-fold increase compared to the USD16 million received in the same period in 2021. MIRA recorded a revenue of USD406 million so far in 2022, of which 3.4% comes from the Departure Tax.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ratified the First Amendment to the Airport Taxes and Fees Act in July 2020, which introduced the Departure Tax. The tax was implemented on January 1 and the previously enacted airport service charge of USD12 for Maldivians and USD25 for foreign passengers is no longer in effect. The tax is levied on passengers based on the airline fare classes and would be waived for passengers with diplomatic immunity and children under the age of two years.
The Departure Tax are USD12 for Maldivians travelling in Economy Class, USD30 for foreigners travelling in Economy Class, USD60 for all passengers travelling in Business Class, USD90 for all passengers travelling in First Class, and USD 120 for all passengers travelling on private jets
