MPL clearing 300 containers every day

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) revealed it has been clearing 300 containers at the harbours in Male’ City every day.

At a press conference, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shahid Ali said MPL has increased its clearance rate during the third quarter. He noted that the cargo volume had shrunk by 50% during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019 and has been gradually recovering, adding that 9,000 containers are brought in every month.

Additionally, Shahid said MPL has significantly improved its clearing operations and is able to clear 300 containers from Male’ and Hulhumale’ every day, compared to the 200 containers it was able to clear in 2021. He said an average of four container ships dock at the harbours.

Furthermore, Shahid said efforts are being made to solve the current biggest challenge, which is the lack of space. As such, he said some areas will be expanded by leveling the ground and installing pavements while repair work will be conducted in some areas. He said MPL is also procuring more equipment and solving the challenges faced by labourers and staff.
