Waste sorting line to be installed at Thilafushi regional resource facility

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology, Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) and Parley Maldives have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to design and install a waste sorting line at the Thilafushi Regional Resource Waste Management Facility.

As part of the agreement, Parley will design, build, and install the nation's first waste sorting line dedicated to waste management, capable of separating mixed recyclables into metals, plastics, and other materials. WAMCO stated the machine is capable of automatically separating different types of material. Currently, waste materials are separated before being transported to Thilafushi and mixed waste materials are separated by hand.

The waste sorting line would allow faster separation of material and assist in waste-to-energy production. The waste-to-energy plant to be built in Thilafushi will process 500 tonnes of waste to generate 10-12MW of electricity.
