Island Enterprises Private Limited has brought the Keekimini Fisheries Complex in Shaviyani Atoll into operation.
The Keekimini Fisheries Complex is a factory with a cold storage capacity of 1,900 tonnes. Island Enterprises said the complex has been brought into operation and fish processing has now begun.
Keekimini currently processes only Yellowfin Tuna and Skipjack Tuna at USD0.84 for more than 1.5kg and USD0.36 for less than 1.5kg. The complex being brought into operation is a step forward in the government's efforts to increase fish purchasing capacity. The government is also consulting with private fish processing companies in the Maldives to identify the difficulties faced by the companies and find solutions.
In addition to Keekimini, the government is also making efforts to bring Funaddu in Thaa Atoll into operation.
