Japan provides USD81,000 grant to upgrade Omadhoo School

The Government of Japan has provided grant assistance of USD 80,731 for the project to upgrade Omadhoo School.

The grant agreement was signed by the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Takeuchi Midori and the Principal of Omadhoo School Hassan Amir, at a special ceremony held at the Ministry of Education.

The grant was provided under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme. The Embassy of Japan in the Maldives stated the funds will go towards the construction of a classroom and an accessible toilet for children with special needs. The funds will also be used to enhance the environment to ensure that the classrooms are safe and comfortable for students to enjoy learning. The school building will also be utilised as an emergency evacuation shelter in case of natural disasters on the island.

The GGP is part of the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) implemented by the Embassy of Japan in the Maldives in order to empower people at the grassroots level. Since 1996, the GGP has been implemented in broad areas such as education, environment, health, transportation, and energy with a view to contributing to the sustainable development of the Maldives.
