Construction begins on Juvenile Justice Unit in Hoarafushi

Ministry of Home Affairs has revealed that the construction of the Juvenile Justice Unit in Hoarafushi in Haa Alifu Atoll has commenced.

The development of the Juvenile Justice Unit in Hoarafushi was contracted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The project was awarded to the state-owned company for USD390,000 to be completed within 150 days.

The Juvenile Justice Unit is being developed as a halfway house to provide rehabilitation and treatment for juveniles apprehended over different criminal activities in Hoarafushi. The facility is being developed on a 10,000sqft plot of land in Hoarafushi. MTCC said the halfway house in Hoarafushi will be the first of its kind to be developed.

The Juvenile Justice Act was passed by the Parliament of the Maldives on November 14, 2019, and ratified by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on November 20, 2019.
