Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali has revealed that Maldivian principals will be hired for every school by the start of the next academic year. There are 218 schools in the Maldives, and some of them have foreign principals.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister Aishath said hiring Maldivians as school principals is a pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and that it will provide social benefits for the students and increase the sense of community in the islands. She, however, said that the biggest challenge in fulfilling the pledge is the lack of well-trained and accredited Maldivian principals.
Minister Aishath said that 18 foreign principals will be replaced by Maldivians by the start of the next academic year, which will complete the initiative to hire Maldivian principals for every school, adding that the Maldivians will complete their training by April.
The Ministry of Education has stated that increasing the salary of principals and teachers this year has solved the challenge of retaining capable teachers and principals.
