Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali has stated that all teachers will receive their licenses before the start of the new academic year.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali said all teachers will receive their licenses before the start of the new academic year and that the Education Act will be significant improvements to the education sector. As such, she said that the act requires every student above grade 10 to be taught a skill until they reach 18 years of age and that the World Bank has provided financial assistance to start the initiative in 28 schools.
The Teachers Registration Board was formed under the Education Act in 2021, to begin the registration and licensing process of all teachers in the Maldives. The board has begun preparations to issue licenses and allow accredited and capable teachers to be hired in schools and improve the education of students.
The Education Act was ratified by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in November 2020. The Act provides a framework needed to thoroughly ensure equal rights and opportunities for children and adults to pursue education, as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Maldives. The Education Act also embraces the fundamental pillars of education: establishing the rights of the students as well as teachers in regard to education, the responsibilities of the state, and parents and tutors.
