Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof has stated that the biggest development in the sports sector is the elimination of bias policies.
Speaking at the Parliament, Minister Mahloof said the administration has brought changes that previous governments had been unable to bring to the sports sector and that the biggest achievement has been to provide opportunities to people with disabilities to play sports. He noted that the Maldives raised its flag at the Paralympics for the first time last year, while previously no effort was made to join the event in the past few years.
Furthermore, Minister Mahloof said more effort has been made to develop the sports sector in the past few years, highlighting that 40 football fields have been built while 85 fields are being built. He also said that the government has built volleyball courts and skate parks, adding that these types of sports had been neglected by previous governments. He said the administration is providing opportunities for all sports and eliminating bias against some types of sports, and the favoritism of male athletes over female athletes.
In conclusion, Minister Mahloof said the completion of some sports-related projects has been delayed due to the contractors and that efforts are being made to complete the work as soon as possible. He also said he was satisfied with the developments made to the sports sector in the past four years, as his term comes to an end.
