Gov't to announce land recipients in May

Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam has said that the determination of the recipients of land plots will be completed by May next year.

The government opened the application process for land and flats under the government's Gedhoruveriyaa scheme on June 26. More than 35,000 applications for housing schemes had been submitted to the portal when the deadline passed on October 15. As such, there were 15,164 applications for the Binveriyaa scheme and a total of 20,697 applications for the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme.

Speaking at the Parliamentary Committee for National Development and Heritage, Minister Aslam said the ministry is still reviewing the forms. He said that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will set up a special committee to look into the land allocation. He added the process of shortlisting the applicants will start once the committee is formed. He also said that the applications will be evaluated and shortlisted and the chosen names will be announced in May next year.

Furthermore, Minister Aslam said that the areas where land will be allocated from Hulhumale' have already been determined. He, however, expressed concern about the delay in land reclamation of Gulhifalhu although the areas to be allocated for land plots have been identified in the plan.

The ministry plans to give out 4,000 housing units under the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme and 5,000 land plots under the Binveriyaa scheme, which includes 1,000 land plots from Hulhumale', 2,000 land plots from Gulhifalhu, and 2,000 land plots from Giraavaru.
