Bicycle lanes to be established in Hulhumale’

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has begun making changes to the main roads in Hulhumale’, which include establishing bicycle lanes.

The changes are being made under the Hulhumale’ Transport Master Plan to make travelling in Hulhumale’ convenient for the public. As part of the changes, HDC will be assigning four lanes for vehicles on the main roads and has already begun implementing the plan on Nirolhumagu and the road surrounding Central Park.

The draft plan for the roads includes special lanes for buses and bicycles. HDC stated that the changes aim to fit the road regulations to international standards and decrease traffic congestion in Hulhumale’.

The draft plan shows that the bicycle lanes will be on the side of the roads and marked by blue lines next to the bus lane, while the other three lanes for motorcycles and cars are next to each other and marked by white lines. A special lane is being established for bicycles in order to prevent bicyclists from obstructing travel for vehicles moving at higher speeds.

The changes will prevent vehicles from parking on Nirolhu Magu but parking near the flats and houses will be allowed. HDC is also developing more parking lots in various parts in Hulhumale’.
