The Maldives and Türkiye have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on disaster and emergency assistance.
The agreement was signed between the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of the Maldives and the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) of Türkiye to strengthen and enhance cooperation and joint working between both countries in the field of emergency and disaster management. The agreement was signed by Chief Executive Hisan Hassan and the Governor of AFAD Yunus Sezer.
Under the MoU, the NDMA and the AFAD agreed to strengthen cooperation in four main areas, including providing assistance and cooperation in disaster and emergency response if requested, sharing lessons learned, experience, and best practices in the field of disaster and emergency response, exchanging visits to share the experience of disaster management professionals of both countries, and conducting training programmes for disaster preparedness and response.
The agreement was established on the sidelines of a high-level meeting in Istanbul, Türkiye, to discuss ways to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities to disasters and emergencies. The discussions will also take place on how to prepare in advance and strengthen the system to monitor such situations before an incident occurs. The two-day meeting will also share information on data collection to determine the risk of an incident.
