Ministry of Economic Development has held a stakeholder meeting with Maldivian tuna exporters to discuss the challenges faced by the fisheries sector and potential solutions.
The meeting was attended by Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail, Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan, and representatives of the trade unions and tuna exporting companies.
The economic ministry stated that the meeting mainly discussed the issue of finding solutions to the difficulties in the development of the fisheries sector in the Maldives. They discussed increasing fish purchasing capacity and finding more markets for Maldivian fish products. The meeting also decided to form a special working group to further strengthen the efforts. The economic ministry said that the establishment of a working group will strengthen the consultations.
The government is working to identify the difficulties in fisheries to develop the sector even further. As such, the government has been holding meetings directly with the fishermen to discuss their concerns and find solutions.
