Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has met with the Hoarafushi Island Council The meeting was held at the island council's office in Hoarafushi, Haa Alifu Atoll.
Speaking to PSM News, President of Hoarafushi Island Council Mohamed Waheed said the meeting with Minister Hussain shared the difficulties faced by the farmers and fishermen of the island. The council asked the fisheries ministry for assistance to expand agriculture on the island. He said the council's views on vertical farming on the island have been shared with the minister. He said the minister has assured that he will look into ways to support the project from the state budget.
Hoarafushi Island Council also shared its concerns with the minister about fishermen having to travel far away to sell their catch. The minister said that it will be solved with the introduction of the new fish processing vessels of the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO).
