President says previous gov'ts failed to provide essential services

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has recalled that most islands lacked essential services when his administration took office four years ago. He added that previous governments had failed to provide adequate electricity, water, sewerage, education, or healthcare services to the residents of the islands. He made the statement while speaking at a function on Nilandhoo in Gaafu Alifu Atoll to inaugurate the new powerhouse and administrative building.

Speaking at the function, President Solih assured the people of the administration's commitment to delivering the developmental aspirations and progress envisioned by the people. He noted that most island communities had previously relied on generator sets they funded to generate electricity. He stated that his administration's policy was to promote equitable development and provide essential services to all islands, regardless of size or population.

Over the past four years, the administration has brought revolutionary changes to electricity services across the country by providing 144 new generator sets and building new powerhouses and administrative buildings on 46 islands through the government utility company, Fenaka Corporation Limited.

The new powerhouse on Nilandhoo, designed to accommodate three 400kW generator sets, can currently generate 1,050kW of power. The old powerhouse, located in the residential area, was 22 years old. The new powerhouse is, however, located away from the residential area.
