President says tourism can be further expanded in Maldives

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that there is still scope for further expansion of tourism in the Maldives. He made the remarks while briefing the media at the President's Office about the progress of the administration's socioeconomic plans.

Speaking at the press conference, President Solih said that many efforts are being made to expand tourism to increase the income of the country. He said the country's economy has successfully recovered to pre-pandemic levels in 2022. He also said that tourism can still be expanded to boost the economy of the country.

Additionally, President Solih said that tourism will grow in the future with the allocation of more islands for resort development. He said that the airports being developed to international standards are also important for the development of the tourism sector. As such, he said that Velana International Airport (VIA), Hanimaadhoo International Airport, and Gan International Airport (GIA) will bring about a major change in the economy of the country. He also highlighted the efforts being made to reduce government expenditure while expanding tourism to boost the economy.

In conclusion, President Solih said the fuel subsidy will be reduced in 2023 to more direct subsidies and changes will be made to reduce the expenditure at Aasandha Company Limited and will be maintained at the level included in the budget for pay harmonisation. He said that it will save USD150 million from the state budget.
