The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has revealed that it is processing 300MT of fish per day.
Speaking to PSM News, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ismail Fauzee said that fishermen are experiencing a productive season, especially in Meemu Atoll, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, and the southern region. He said MIFCO is purchasing fish without limits but that sending vessels to faraway regions is challenging. As such, he said the company is unloading its vessels as fast as it can in order to send them off for more fish purchases.
MIFCO has added three boats to its fleet to increase its fish purchasing capacity and is currently in the process of registering the vessels. In 2022, the state-owned company recorded the highest number of fish processed and the highest amount of payments made to fishermen in the last 12 years, with 64,000MT of fish purchased for USD69.2 million.
