Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture has expressed concern over the excess use of pesticides in the Maldives.
Speaking to PSM News, Director of Agricultural Training and Extension Service Ali Amir said that farmers in the Maldives have often not received information about the dangers of using pesticides and plant nutrients. He said the ministry has also noticed cases of cutting down crops without giving enough time after spraying pesticides.
Additionally, Amir said many programmes are being conducted to raise awareness among farmers about these issues. He said the ministry is trying to work closely with farmers by developing a web application and a mobile application where they can find the necessary information.
The government aims to increase the share of agriculture in the economy by developing and expanding the industry in the Maldives.
