Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed the harbour and channel dredging operation in Noomaraa, Shaviyani Atoll. The scope of works included dredging 6,347cbm of the harbour and channel.
Noomaraa spans 41 hectares and has a population of 518 residents. The main source of income for the island is fishing and agriculture.
The harbour in Noomaraa is 250ft long and 50ft wide and was built in 2012. The harbour was built after dredging 80m of the coast and vessels find it difficult to approach the harbour during bad weather. In October last year, the accumulation of sediment made it difficult to use the harbour and there have been incidents of vessels running aground on the side of the channel, including a Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry.
