Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has revealed that only 19 local councils have made preparations to accept annual fees for vehicles and vessels. From the first day of the year, the collection of fees for vehicles will be the responsibility of the local council where the vehicle is registered.
Speaking to PSM News, Deputy Minister Hamadh Abdul Ghanee stated that 19 local councils will be accepting annual fees for vehicles and vessels. He said the remaining councils are also working with the Bank of Maldives (BML) and the Ministry of Finance to make arrangements. He also said that the transport ministry has given an initial deadline until December 31, 2022, to for the arrangements. He, however, said the councils can now start providing the service after arrangements have been finalised since it is a new initiative.
Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) stopped collecting vehicles and vessels fees at the end of 2022 paving way for local councils to collect vehicles and vessels fees through a portal setup by the transport ministry.
