Thinadhoo will be designated as a city: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed has stated that the administration is developing Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll to designate it as a city.

At a campaign rally in Thinadhoo, President Solih said that many projects have been planned for Thinadhoo, which shows its importance in the administration’s developmental policy, and that the island will have received city status by his next visit. He said that all resources will be provided and established to designate Thinadhoo as a city, including the development of a commercial port and an airport near the island.

Additionally, President Solih said the Thinadhoo Regional Hospital will be upgraded and a picnic island will be developed in the lagoon. He also revealed that the administration has decided to build more housing units on the island, and noted that the development of the water supply and sewerage network and powerhouse is ongoing. He added that the local council will soon open applications for the plots in the newly reclaimed land.

An island will receive city status after reaching a population of 10,000 registered residents. Thinadhoo has a population that is now close to 10,000 residents.
