Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is expected to complete the development of the harbour in Kinolhas, Raa Atoll, in February.
MTCC stated the overall project is 84% complete while the quay wall concrete work is 97% complete. The project also involved dredging operations of the new harbour basin, channel dredging operations, construction of a groyne, and installation of concrete blocks for quay wall construction and beacon installation. The value of the project is USD2.9 million.
MTCC began the project in 2021 after the harbour was made unusable after the channel was obstructed by sand. The residents in Kinolhas said they had issues with sand obstructing the channel since the development of the harbour in 2008. The issue has caused problems in transporting agricultural products from Kinolhas and transporting goods to the island. The project is expected to solve the longstanding problem of sand obstructing the harbour, which alleviates travel and transport issues for the 600 residents living on the island.
