World Maritime University (WMU) has decided to conduct short-term courses in the Maldives.
Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula and President of WMU Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry held the discussions in an online meeting, along with senior officials of both institutions. During the discussions, the university agreed to establish an e-learning platform and also send its experts to the Maldives to conduct the most beneficial courses for the country’s maritime sector.
WMU stated that it has trained 15 Maldivians who are serving in the maritime sector, while two Maldivians are currently enrolled on scholarships. It further stated that Maldivians will soon receive the opportunity to apply for online postgraduate courses.
WMU was founded in 1983 by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), a specialised agency of the United Nations (UN), as its premier centre of excellence for maritime postgraduate education, research, and capacity building. The university offers unique postgraduate educational programmes, undertakes wide-ranging research in maritime and ocean-related studies, and continues maritime capacity building in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
